And that’s the kind of work we want to be part of.The role:Lonza Pharma & Biotech has an excellent opportunity for a Lead Scientist to join the Cell Engineering Team R&D group at the Cambridge, UK location. We are looking for experienced scientists with a background in Cell expression technologies and synthetic biology.As a Lead Scientist/Senior Scientist you will play a key part in developing next-generation industrially relevant cell expression systems or services for the production of complex therapeutic proteins. You will lead and support various R&D laboratory based projects in Lonza and act as a mentor to more junior members of the team.The role:Contribute to the development of new CHO-based mammalian expression hosts and vector systems for complex therapeutic protein productionMammalian cell line engineering using methods such as random integration, targeted integration, and gene editing (e.g., CRISPR-based systems)Generate mammalian expression vectors using advanced assembly techniquesPerform transfections, cell culture techniques (e.g., shake flask/bioreactor) and phenotypic characterization of edited cell lines using relevant assays (e.g., NGS, ddPCR, qPCR, flow cytometry and other cell based assays)Analyse, interrogate, interpret, and document data to produce high-quality, traceable records, with sign-off under project lead directionPrepare and present scientific reports and documentation, including data analysis and experimental findings.Collaborate closely with other R&D teams to drive improvements in recombinant protein expression, particularly with R&D Process Development, Microbial Expression, and Protein AnalyticsInnovate or identify new and relevant technologies for potential evaluation and implementation.Work as a flexible team player, collaborate effectively to navigate changing priorities and serve as a role model for junior team members in the laboratoryKey requirements:MSc/PhD in Life Sciences, Molecular Biology, Biotechnology or related fieldsExtensive experience in R&D, either in industrial or academic settings. Running projects from start to finishStrong technical expertise in molecular biology and cell culture, particularly in developing or manipulating mammalian expression systems (e.g., hosts, vectors, processes)Experience in gene editing technologies and cell line engineering, preferably with CRISPR-based systemsFamiliarity with high-throughput screening methods and data analysis toolsExpertise in synthetic biology techniques such as vector construction, and genetic circuit design is desirableProven ability to contribute to technology development projects, with experience in implementing new technologies transferable from research to GMP manufacturing is advantageousAbility to collaborate in cross-functional teams to transfer technology and support commercialization effortsExcellent communication skills, with the ability to present scientific data clearly and effectivelyEvery day, Lonza’s products and services have a positive impact on millions of people.
