Organizational Unit OverviewThe Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology (ACB) is dedicated to the discovery, development, and promotion of biomedical knowledge involving cell biology and the anatomical sciences of Gross Anatomy, Developmental Anatomy, Histology, and Neuroanatomy. Through this mission, we aim to improve human health through innovative educational programs and excellence in research and scholarly activities in a dynamic learning community.The Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology is located in the Brody Medical Sciences Building on the west campus of East Carolina University and has fifteen faculty, eight staff, two research fellows, two office support staff, and six to ten doctoral students. Our faculty are actively involved with research areas that include signal transduction; stem cells; educational models and distance learning; cellular senescence and determinants of radiosensitivity in cancer; rearrangements of the cytoskeleton that occur during spermatogenesis; role of delta-catenin, presenilin and cadherins in synaptic remodeling and in cancer; function of tight junctions and claudins in ionic and tissue homeostasis; hyaluronan-CD44 interactions and their influence on BMP-initiated Smad signaling and other signaling pathways; and CD44-initiated signaling pathways that result in enhanced MMP production and extracellular degradation.Throughout the brief history of the Brody School of Medicine at East Carolina University, the Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology has had an active role in training graduate students. Our former students now hold prestigious postdoctoral, faculty, and professional positions throughout the United States. Job DutiesThis position will assess and develop the methodology needed to test defined hypotheses. It is expected that the position will independently optimize the methodology through tool identification and utilization. In addition, the position must be able to collect and manage data across multiple mediums while also being able to independently interpret the quality of the results to ensure accuracy and reproducibility. With optimization, it is expected that the position will create SOPs to distribute to other lab members or other labs as needed and continuously seek external grant funding for research productivity. Finally, it is expected that the position will operate independently to make decisions for the lab when it comes to meeting the research mission of the lab.Research – 60%

  • The Research Scientist is critical to the successful operations of the Department Chair and the overall Department of Anatomy and Cell Biology.
  • The duties of the Research Scientist include the following: Serving as the Lab manager for Dr. Spangenburg (order reagents, maintain equipment, conduct required regulatory work chemical inventory, ensuring regulatory compliance).
  • Responsible for oversight and coordination of activities of all laboratory staff, including but not limited to training staff on all equipment and methods used in the laboratory. Responsible for the development, implementation, and maintenance of all laboratory safety plans, including the Biosafety Level 2 Plan. (BSL-2).
  • Independently conduct animal experiments that include the following methods: the measurement of skeletal force production, genotyping of genetically modified mice, cyro-sectioning of frozen tissue, immune- and histo-chemical staining of tissue, isolation, and culture of skeletal muscle stem cells.
  • Management and ability to use epifluorescent microscopes.
  • Responsible for ensuring inventory and maintenance of all laboratory equipment, biological materials, and materials associated with ongoing and former projects.

Anatomy Gift Program – 30%

  • Contributing to the Anatomy Gift Program (AGP) housed in the ACB department. Maintaining and updating AGP files. Answering phone calls specific to the AGP. Contributing to the maintenance of ACB lab space and helping other department colleagues by providing a recommendation to the department chair.

Department Compliance – 10%

  • The position will also serve as the Department of Anatomy & Cell Biology biosafety and compliance manager. Contributing to departmental safety regulations and responsibility for ensuring research and safety compliance in the labs and common equipment rooms.

Minimum Education/ExperiencePost-baccalaureate degree required; candidates demonstrating comparable independent instructional or educational activities related to laboratory management or practice, will accept an undergraduate degree in a life sciences or medical sciences field and 2 or more years of relevant experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

  • Demonstrated experience in mouse handling, skeletal muscle tissue dissection, measuring murine muscle force production, muscle stem cell culture techniques, and experience in genotyping.
  • Demonstrated experience in team-based science and working in groups of individuals on various projects.
  • Demonstrated experience in maintaining electronic databases and with laboratory safety standards
